Internal

Strengths

(What makes it an advantage over other apps or other resources)

  • cost free

  • Very easy to learn, so it can help the students from the first minute

  • suitable for children from age of 10 years

  • the app is self explanatory, illustrated with clear symbols

  • possible to use online with the web browser or offline with the app

  • geogebra has a huge community, where you can find help, videos, suggestions and extensions in the internet

  • with its extensions it is still useful for more complex mathematical problems

  • The app is still developing and growing, just try geogebra augmented reality

  • possible to import geogebra situations in other programs

  • The application can be used online without the need to be installed on the devices

  • It can work offline

  • It can solve basically any type of operations

  • Calculations are simplified

  • Students learn theory while  doing exercises

Weaknesses

(What makes it a disadvantage relative to others)

  • to work on a higher level with geogebra, students and teachers have to invest time to learn the functions of geogebra itself, like programming certain mathematical problems. So it is more to learn the program, instead working on mathematical solutions.

  • You need to know the app very well to exploit all the potentialities

External

Opportunities

(elements from the context/ environment that can be exploited to its advantage)

  • students transfer geometrical problems on the device and work on another level

  • mathematical operations get more flexible and open horizon of the student

  • working on bigger projects over more lessons, where students have the opportunity to correct mistakes or  expand their drawings

  • The students can self-correct the exercises

  • immediate correction of the study of function(PLOT)

  • Through its use you can improve other technological skills

Threats

(elements from the context/ environment that can create obstacles and difficulties to the use of that app)

  • main threat is to work with geogebra, because it is nice, instead of using the program to improve the students mathematical skills

  • Problems with the connection if you don’t work offline

App: QUIZLET

Use:

Digital Flashcard app and web service for training vocabulary

  • primarily vocab training

  • useful for other scenarios as well, for example Biology

Useful for following subjects:

English, almost any other subject

link: Quizlet

Please contribute to the analysis by adding the conclusions reached as a result of your observation…..

Internal

Strengths

(What makes it an advantage over other apps or other resources)

Very well known, there‘s a highly motivated team behind „Quizlet“, there are many learning games for different types of learners (e.g. audio transcription via synthesized voice output or audio recordings from the teacher), Live Games

Teachers can prepare attractive exercises for their students.

Weaknesses

(What makes it a disadvantage relative to others)

As of yet there‘s no possibility to add more than 2 cards as once, which means there‘s only the front and the back of a digital flashcards.

Other programs offer more slides per flashcard (e.g. for creating flashcards that offer one slide for the question, one slide for the answer and one slide for an explanation).

It takes some time to prepare it, you have to search for pictures if you want to create a picture dictionary.

External

Opportunities

(elements from the context/ environment that can be exploited to its advantage

Usable in various environments: Quizlet can be used with almost any web browser or with apps. It offers so called „Live Games“, where pupils take part in a contest against each other (comparable with „Kahoot Games“). These „Live Games“ can also be started in any classroom as long as there is an internet connection.

You don’t need internet connection in class to use it because you can print it.

Threats

(elements from the context/ environment that can create obstacles and difficulties to the use of that app)

If students want to learn vocab for themselves (for example at home), they have to create a Quizlet account (which, on the other hand, is free).

App: PLICKERS

Use: Create a test, print already created cards, use in class

Useful for following subjects: various subjects, test with multiple choice answers

link: https://www.plickers.com/

Please contribute to the analysis by adding the conclusions reached as a result of your observation…..

Internal

Strengths

(What makes it an advantage over other apps or other resources)

Attractive to use with students on every subject.

You only need one mobile phone or tablet for the teacher.

You can use it at any time during the lesson.

Immediate correction.

Alternately, a group of students can create tests for their peers.

Weaknesses

(What makes it a disadvantage relative to others)

You need to print plickers cards ahead, but you can use them many times.

You have to create tests yourself.

It is difficult to use mathematical language and specific symbology of Mathematics

The construction of items with images and text if there is a need to switch text with images or use more than one image.

External

Opportunities

(elements from the context/ environment that can be exploited to its advantage)

You can match students names to numbers and you will have their score in your device. You can also send students’ results to your email account.

You can can use Plickers offline.

Threats

(elements from the context/ environment that can create obstacles and difficulties to the use of that app)

It takes some time to check all the answers if you check your students separately.

App: DUOLINGO

Use: French classes in Agrupamento Escolas de Sátão, Portugal

Each lesson includes a variety of speaking, listening, translation, and multiple choice challenges to learn languages

Useful for following subjects: French, English

link: https://it.duolingo.com

Please contribute to the analysis by adding the conclusions reached as a result of your observation…..

Internal

Strengths

(What makes it an advantage over other apps or other resources)

This App makes pupils more interested in learning new contents in French classes.

Classes become more dynamic.

Cost free.

Very easy to learn, so it can help the students from the first minute.

Motivating also for weaker students

Students learn while playing so they do not perceive it as a burden

They can play everywhere, anytime

Weaknesses

(What makes it a disadvantage relative to others)

If we use it during all classes pupils get used to it and become less interested in learning through it.

Too much noise, sometimes.

There are some technical bugs

Some problems with the listenings since the synthesized voice mispronounces some words

In English you can progress just up to a certain point

Not very useful to improve vocabulary since relatively few words are used

The PLUS version is paying

External

Opportunities

(elements from the context/ environment that can be exploited to its advantage)

Very interesting in what concerns vocabulary and grammar.

Useful when you have to substitute a collegue the very last minute and you haven’t planned a lesson

Threats

(elements from the context/ environment that can create obstacles and difficulties to the use of that app)

Whenever Internet doesn’t work

App: GEO MASTER

Use: Acquiring a deeper geographical knowledge about our world

Useful for following subjects: Geography, History, Economics, Politics

link: Geo Master

Please contribute to the analysis by adding the conclusions reached as a result of your observation…..

Internal

Strengths

(What makes it an advantage over other apps or other resources)

It has got a beautiful design and there are several languages available.

It offers different game modes for improving your geographical knowledge

Due to its time based game mode it‘s highly motivating for students.

Weaknesses

(What makes it a disadvantage relative to others)

“Geo Master“ doesn’t offer a globe model of our world. If you‘re in search for a real and „grown up“ atlas app, other solutions might appeal more suitable to you. The strength of the „Geo Master“ app lies in its game modes.

External

Opportunities

(elements from the context/ environment that can be exploited to its advantage)

The app can be used without having an internet connection.

Threats

(elements from the context/ environment that can create obstacles and difficulties to the use of that app)

“Geo Master“ is a payed app, which can be an obstacle for students.

App: G Suite for Education

(also named: GOOGLE Apps for education )

Use:

Very useful cloud-based environment to write DOCS, create PRESENTATIONS, work with TABLES and share information within the school-community.

Each teacher and student gets an own account in the Google-Cloud “DRIVE” with unlimited webspace. It´s free for schools and Google promises a special protection of data privacy for schools.

Useful for following subjects: All ! (e.g.  Languages, Science, History, Geography, …)

link: https://edu.google.com/k-12-solutions/g-suite/?modal_active=none

Please contribute to the analysis by adding the conclusions reached as a result of your observation…..

Internal

Strengths

(What makes it an advantage over other apps or other resources)

Very useful for teacher and students likewise. Students can create their documents or presentations online only using a web-browser. (works best with CHROME) No special software-download needed.

They don´t have to worry about “saving” a document - happens automatically. For instance they start working on a project in school and continue at home without having to save a document on an USB-stick. No worries for administrators because of possible virus-attacks through USB-sticks.

Files can easily be shared with one or more persons who all can work on one document at the same time.

No need to have a school account. Also students can be administrators

Great training materials online

Great when you have to correct students’ papers (in a GOOGLE DOC) since you can comment on their mistakes

You can upload very heavy documents in DRIVE

Weaknesses

(What makes it a disadvantage relative to others)

You have to be connected to the Internet to use GOOGLE APPS FOR EDUCATION

After a student leaves school the administrator has to deactivate their account. Students should transfer their files to their private Google-Drive (only 15 GB webspace in the free version)

External

Opportunities

(elements from the context/ environment that can be exploited to its advantage)

Students learn to work with cloud-based software rather than working with the Office or Open-Office products and updating them all the time.
The GOOGLE APPS FOR EDUCATION just needs an updated web-browser and an internet-connection.

Working together on the same document at the same time is also an opportunity for modern methods of teaching.

The included GOOGLE CLASSROOM is a tool for class-assignments and their assessment.

GOOGLE provides several apps for mobile devices:
DRIVE, DOCS, TABLES, PRESENTATION, MAIL, CLASSROOM

Threats

(elements from the context/ environment that can create obstacles and difficulties to the use of that app)

Slow Internet connection in some parts of the school.

ICT-rooms don't always have enough pc for each student of one class to work efficiently.

Prohibition to use mobile phones in the classroom in some countries(?)
